TWO SAMBO SPECTACULARS IN ENGLAND 2014
TWO SAMBO SPECTACULARS IN ENGLAND 2014
Sponsore
"Jewelers of North Capital" ( St. Petersburg)
The Long awaited Presidents Cup is to be held on September 27th 2014 at the GLOW Bluewater Centre Dartford Kent. http://www.glowbluewater.co.uk
This will prove to be the most exciting Sambo/Combat Sambo Event to be held in the UK since 1992 when the BSF organised the World Sambo Championships in Herne Bay Kent. The Presidents Cup is a Joint Venture between the Commonwealth Sambo Association and British Sombo Federation; the whole event will be co-ordinated by FIAS Representative Andrew Moshanov. We are extremely pleased to have "Jewelers of North Capital" ( St. Petersburg)” as our sponsor because without them the whole event would be a no go, our sponsors are very keen in supporting Sambo
Originally the event was to be a Cultural Event to be held in the City of London but things have changed since then and it has now come purely a sporting event with the aim to promote Sambo/Combat Sambo throughout the UK and the Commonwealth. This will help to promote our application for Sambo to become an Olympic Sport
The Venue of GLOW at Bluewater Dartford was a stroke of genius, this a large venue is part of the massive Bluewater Shopping centre, it is easy to reach as has lots of free parking and for a Sporting Event is far better position then Central London. WE will see two International size mat Areas and seating for a 1000.
The whole event will be covered by the Internet TV Channel SAMBO-FIAS.ORG CHANNEL 1 so all the action will be seen throughout the World, so even those who can make the event can watch it from your computer
The Presidents Cup will be rather unique in that it will be a team event with 8 teams competing for the Presidents Cup. They will be Great Britain, Russia, Belorussia, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan,
Commonwealth (Americas/Europe). Commonwealth (Africa), Commonwealth (Oceania/Asia). Amongst the teams there will be many World and European Champions
Teams will consist Sambo Men, 2 Sambo Women and 2 Combat Sambo Men. Weights will be as follows Sambo men u62k, u68k, u74k, u82k, u90k, Sambo Ladies u64k, 64k to 80k, Combat Sambo Men u100k, and o100k. Each Team will line up against each other at the beginning of each event and the atmosphere will be electric.
This event is not to be missed. Not just for Sambo enthusiasts but also for all those who enjoy Grappling and Grapple/Strike. The ticket office will be open at the end of July.
It is hoped to have many important guests and some celebrities at this event but the one person the BSF are looking forwarding meeting again is FIAS President Shestakov. Since he has been FIAS President he done more for British Sambo then any other FIAS administration.
In the next three week the British Sombo Federation will be announcing their team for this event
COMMONWEALTH
SAMBO
CHAMPIONSHIPS
With many Commonwealth countries being present at the Presidents Cup, The CSA decided to run their 1st Commonwealth Championships in England. I am sure that CSA President Lord
Simon Reading saw this as very appropriate as the Commonwealth stems from the British Empire. The Commonwealth Games has always been considered the friendly games a meeting of a large family of countries with one thing in common Great Britain and I am sure the Commonwealth Sambo Championships will be no different. The event will be held the day after the Presidents Cup it is hoped to have a venue in the Dartford area.
This will event will not be a Team event it will be an individual event with all the relevant International Weight Categories. To enter you
have register through your home country and have the relevant Citizenship for that country.
For those living in the UK your Country Representatives are England Russell Dodds, Scotland Robin Hyslop, Northern Ireland Chris St John at present we do not have a Welsh Federation but hopefully that will change in the next few months
This again is a unique event to held in the UK yet to have 2 major International Events in one country in 1 year is great but to have two major events in one weekend is fantastic a thing dreams are made of

British Sambo/Combat Sambo Championship 2014
British Sambo/Combat Sambo Championships
April 5th 2014
Bedford
As President of the British Sombo
Federation I attended the British Open Sambo & Combat Sambo Championships
held in Bedford. This has now become the main Venue for this event as it is
central to the rest of the Country, has a first class aeroport and hotels plus
it is a very beautiful and hospitable Town. The event attracted players from
all over the World, Kazakhstan, Bulgaria, Portugal, France. Chechnya, Ghana, and
Russia and of course the UK. The event was organised once again by BSF Vice
President Russell Dodds and his Club the Bedford Grappling Academy.
This year was not the best-attended
event we have organised but in terms of quality it outstripped any thing we
have done in the past and proved an exciting day for all. You knew as soon as
the fighters walked in the door this was to be a quality event. It seems
strange that we do not attract a lot of youngsters from Judo as Sambo bears a
lot of similarities and the scoring and referee rules are far superior to Judo
plus they are easy to understand but as one of the competitors said you play at
Judo till you are 14 and then move on to the real stuff at 15.
Aln Kontozi here with Paul Sawyer Alan was one of our first International referees he refereed at the World Games in London 1985 |
Normally when I write reports like
this I mention the Referees and Officials at the end of the report but this
time I will change that as this year they worked hard to make the
competition a success.
Competition Organiser – BSF Vice
President Russell Dodds
Competition Controller – BSF Secretary
Referees- John Clarke, Stephen
Sweetlove, Alan Kontozi, Darren Richardson, Vadim Kolganov, Colin Carrott, Paul
Sawyer, Lee Till. Also thanks to Rebecca and Channel for manning the tables
The Junior Sambo started the day
not the most awing inspiring but they all tried very hard and enjoyed the event,
all the youngsters came from Warriors Grappling Academy Sittingbourne, Spitfire
Sombo and Judo Club Folkestone and Bedford Grappling Academy a big thank you to
them for supporting the event. Hopefully they will continue to run local events
to encourage the children.
It was the senior event we were all
looking forward to here are some of the top names who were due to compete, Matt
Clempner England, Karl Etherington England, Ashley Costa England, Danny Carrott
England, Jamie Marzetti England, Danny Roberts Scotland, Vesekin Ivanov Bulgaria, Georgia Georgiev Bulgaria, Alex Amoako
Ghana, Barry Gibson England. This was an
International line up.
I am not going to write a report on every match but just highlight
some of the better matches.
Sambo
Karl Etherington completely dominated the 0100k class beating
everyone with maximum points, Karl was a member of the British Judo Team.
U100k class we allowed players from the U90k class to enter this
event as well at the request of the players. Georgi Georgiev Bulgaria and last
years winner won the title again this year but it was much harder competition
for him he had to fight Danny Roberts a previous British Champion and student of his he won
this on a margin of 2 pts. The excitement of the day was him verses Matt
Clempner. Matt was a World Bronze medallist in the O100k class in 2012 he now
fights Combat Sambo, Pro Cage and there is talk of him becoming a Pro Boxer. He
has dropped his weight from 125k to 89k. The match was an interesting one with
Georgiou experience as an International Judo and Sambo player against the
equivalent experience of Matt so they were completely equal. As the fight
progressed Matt gained a 2pt advantage and it looked like he was a possible
winner. Fate was to interfere some weeks ago Matt had damaged his ribs and
during this bout the rib injury reoccurred so he had to withdraw. Would he
have won who knows? what a great match.
Matt had already competed in the u90k class, which he won by
beating Danny Roberts on a close run fight.
U82k class was a final between two adversaries who train regularly
together both had been British Champions they were Jamie Marzetti Warriors
Grappling Academy and Danny Carrott Spitfire Sombo. Danny has been British
Champion at u100k, u90k and now has dropped to u82k. The fight as expected was
very tactical and up to the dying minutes Jamie was in the lead by 1 pt. but
with seconds to go Jamie made a mistake and Danny took the advantage to get a
4pt holds down. British Champion in three different weight groups not a bad
achievement
U74k Class Ashley Costa was favourite to win this event as a
previous British champions and International it seemed nothing would stand in
his way. I have taught countless Champions British and World Champions but the
two I class as my most technically successful and proficient have been my son
John and Ashley Costa. As I know longer Coach on a regularly basis Ashley’s
announcement that this would be his last British Championship would be an end
an era for me, my son John retired through injury some years ago. So watching
Ashley fighting took 20 years of me and brought me back to my glory days of
coaching. Ashley had been sailing through his opponents using some very fast
drop shoulder throws and a pick up throw was most probably the best technique
of the day. So when he met Ryan Richards from Red Star I thought it was to be
another win far from it. Maybe Ashley started of a bit to relaxed but his
attempt at a pick up failed and Ryan countered him with a 4 pt throw this was
soon followed by another 4 pt throw, it must have suddenly dawned on Ashley
that he was on the point of losing. Then he switched into another mind set and piled
on the techniques to win with 20pts to 8pts
a tremendous win for an exceptional player
Ashley's Pickup |
U68k class was quite an evenly matched event wit the Bulgarian VESELIN IVANOV Combat Sambo Champion
winning the Gold leaving Casey Belsey and ALEX AMAOKO to fight for silver. Alex dominated
this match beating Casey by significant points lead to take well-deserved
silver.
Ladies Open Emily Crawford won this event in some style. This
event was of an exceptional good standard and was interesting to watch with all
the Young Ladies trying big throws. Most probably the Best ladies Sambo fights
I have seen in GB for years
Matt Clempner was presented with a BSF Master of Sambo Certificate
for his World Bronze in 2012 the first World medal for GB in over 20 years
Next up was the Combat Sambo this is a relatively new sport to the
UK and we are still in the Novice stage when organising these events. This year
the BSF insisted that correct equipment was to be worn and as you can see in
the photo’s it make for better presentation of the sport. Yet we still had
problems with correct coloured safety equipment for Combat Sambo. Although the
entry form had been sent out nearly 4 months in advance and countless emails
had been sent on numerous occasions we still had competitors turning up with
the wrong coloured equipment, my own feeling was they knew the rules and should
be disqualified the BSF Committee over ruled me and let them compete. Next year
I believe we should check equipment at weigh in and only allow BSF sanctioned
equipment.
The difference in standard in Sambo i.e. between a Club standard
Player and National Standard Player is not that important in terms of injury
but with Combat Sambo that is totally different because Full Contact Punches
and Kicks are allowed which can cause serious injury. So when we realised that
we had Karl Etherington with 10 Pro fights behind him, we asked him to step
down because he was up against Novice and Club Class players he totally agreed.
Saying that everyone should be matched against someone of his or her own standard.
Matt Clempner another Pro fighter also withdrew
European Gold Medallist Combat Sambo VESELIN IVANOV won his
weight group with ease making it more of exhibition fights, this was not
denigrate his opponent who were quite prepared to take him on and that took
courage in itself.
There were three Groups in this Combat Sambo competition as the
years go by I am sure it will get bigger when that happens we need to Introduce
Novice Class, Intermediate Class and advanced Class for the safety of the
competitors.
I expect both Matt Clempner and Karl Etherington will be selected
for the Worlds in Japan but that is up to Darren Richardson and Combat Sambo
Committee to decide, the same applies to the Sambo where it will be John Clarke
and his committee will select the players. BUT everything comes down to money
the BSF is the UKSport recognised body but it receives no funding and not being
an Olympic Sport funding will be practically impossible. Always amazes me
Football with its £billions still get Tax Payers funding and we get nothing?
This was really good event it saw some excellent Sambo in fact the
best ever seen in the British Open, it saw the growing of British Combat Sambo
but most of all it was most probably the friendliest event I have been to for many
years
Remind you that the end of April there is a Grappling Competition at Sittingbourne Warriors Grappling Academy, July Scottish Sambo Open, September Bedford Open Judo and Sambo, November Swallows Sittingbourne Junior Judo, Senior Sambo, Senior Kurash, Senior Belt Wrestling, Senior MMA Grappling Event
