Sambo to be included in European Olympic Games

Below is an article about the acceptance of Sambo into the European Olympic Games, this is great news for us in the British Sombo Federation and as Andrew says below the start of Sambo/Sombo/Cambo started in 1967 yet the real work has been done by the British Sombo Federation founded in 1986. The BSF has had to rely on its members to cover the costs of Tournaments and International events for many years. In recent years since the FIAS Presidency of Mr V Shestakov the BSF has had financial help and practical help with equipment etc.

This development could get us recognition with the British Olympic Committee and maybe some funding who knows but we will be looking for a selected GB Team for the event in Azerbaijan. This news coupled with the the Presidents Cup and Commonwealth Sambo Championships in Dartford last weekend of September proves that Sambo in GB is on the move and all the hard work done by the BSF since 1986 has come to fruition. This success could not have happened without the hard work of FIAS.

Congratulations to everybody !

Great news came through today as SAMBO was officially approved as part of programme of the 1st European Olympic Games to be staged in Baku, Azerbaijan, 2015

It would not be possible without the true efforts and dedication of the "pioneers of Sambo in GBR and Europe", who started promoting this sport since late 1960s and 1970s here in UK and Europe-wide. Patrick Hickey, President of European Olympic Committee, who compete in the first SAMBO event in GBR for Ireland - is one of them. The Sambo match USSR-ENGLAND-IRELAND (1967) should be commemorated as the staring point of this long road, resulted in such an achievement of FIAS under the current leadership of Mr. Shestakov.

This is a tremendous breakthrough for all of us in UK, who was keeping the fire in the fireplace for all of these years and made it happen at the end of the day.

What's next?  Serious work and close liaison with British Olympic Committee due course.

Congratulations, and lets go serious.

Great Britain proved that we can have medals at the Worlds and we shall have them at the Euro Olympics.

Catch Wrestling

Many people make a big thing about MMA Grappling, I personally have registered our club with the British Wrestling Association which does the FILA Version which is call Amatuer MMA. Yet long before this form of Submission Wrestling came to prominence there was Lancashire Catch as Catch Can or Catch Wrestling. This was a hard brutal form of wrestling not for the feint hearted and I believe started in the the late 18th century. I first came across it back in the 1980's when the famous Jiu Jitsuka Iron Man Trev Roberts showed me some moves, what a lot people do not realise  Trevor was a very competent wrestler. Later a young man named Gary Pollard form the Northeast joined my organisation and he actually had classes in Catch he also wrote a small book on the subject. I recently came accross the YouTube clip below which prompted me to put a piece on my Blog as a reminder to those that think they have reinvented the wheel the past should not be forgotten. On a different subject but in the same vein of remembering the past.  Who uses the Shield Techniques of the ancient Romans? The Police!

This is not my petition

A Petition is being circulated called

This Petition is in no way connected to me.  As BSF President I have to remain neutral for any alteration to Rules of the Sport and Constitution until it has been discussed by the BSF EC and put to the AGM

These suggestions should be put forward to the BSF EC and a petition of BSF members; these members have to be verified, would be welcomed. The BSF will discuss this along with other suggestions like “All Male and Female events should be abolished and the term should be Adult Competition were both sexes meet as equals”

I would like to point out that in GB there is very little interest in Combat Sambo as was seen by the entry at the British Open. Hopefully the Presidents Cup will rectify this

BSF President

Presidents Cup-Europeans

The Presidents Cup to be held at the GLOW Bluewater Centre Dartford on Saturday September 27th 2014 http://combatarts.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/two-sambo-spectaculars-in-england-2014.html has attracted a great deal of Media interest especially from the Martial Arts Fraternity. FEDOR EMELYANENKO and OLEG TAKTAROV most probably Russia's 2 greatest fighters hope to be in attendance. The spectator seating for this event will be 800 and the BSF have been allocated a 100 seats. Overall organiser is Andrew Moshanov FIAS Technical Advisor, the BSF have a vital part to play as Consultants to the event and are pulling out all the stops to make this an event to be proud of.

In the next few weeks tickets will be available as will publicity packages, this is an an event not to be missed especially as Russia will be sending their top fighters. So if you want see Sambo and Combat Sambo at its best make sure you are there.

Why is it called the "PRESIDENTS CUP" quite simply it is in appreciation of all the FIAS Presidents throughout the World it is a practical way of saying thankyou for the work they have done for World Wide Sambo

Wit many Commonwealth Countries being involved in this event it made good sense to organise the Commonwealth Sambo Championships the following day. The BSF will be helping out with this event by supplying table officials but the overall organiser are Lord Simon Reading President CSA and Andrew Moshanov FIAS Technical Advisor. In the next few weeks full details of this event will be available

Bob Bradley R.I.P.

Bob Bradley a well known Judoka in the 1970's has died following an accident at his home he was just 67 years old. Bob a Superheavy Player had won every Judo Associations National Judo Championships and represented all of them at International Level, he was also an International Free Style Wrestler and Sambo Player.

Bob was very much my Bogey man I fought him on several occasions during the 1970's although I beat him a few times he had bested me more time the I beat him. Looking back I felt I was the better player but every now and then you come up against someone who just syches you out and Bob was that one for me. I think it was because when I was 22/23 nobody was beating me and that made me arrogant, then along came Bob who beat me, this obviously knocked my confidence especially as Bob was a showman and would parade after a win, this humiliated me as well. Funnily enough this defeat made me train harder and I got a lot better but I just could not get over the defeat against Bob every time I met him.

My last match with him was in the BJA 1978 Southern Area Open because I had joined the BJA from the BJC I was not particularly like by the hierarchy in the Southern Area BJA and to top it all me the so called inferior judoka from another organisation had the cheek to win the British Trials. Refereeing in those days was slightly political so I was prepared for some shall we say some suspect refereeing. I lost on a rather dubious penalty score. I never competed in that event again.

Bob was a large man and was well respected and his Harai Makikomi was awesome, he was not a Starbrook, Jacks or Adams but those who followed grappling will remember him with affection and respect

International Cadet Sambo Tournament

"International Tournament "POBEDA" took place in St.Petersburg this weekend.
This is the 24th Annual tournament with the great traditions and long history behind it. It was initially organised to commemorate the V-Day and approved by the President of Russia as a means of sports and cultural education for the children.

It takes place in the same Sports Arena St. Petersburg "Yubileiny" where the latest World Championships 2013 was staged. The 29 full cadet teams of various Russian regions and other countries as Finland, Latvia, USA, etc., came here to participate and compete for the main Trophy.

Practically, this tournament is one of the most established cadet tournaments of this kind in Russia and is the same mature as our British Open, which was staged last year for the 25th time here in Bedford.

With Sombo on the rise in Great Britain - we look very enthusiastic to the perspective to participate there in St. Petersburg in the 25th Anniversary Tournament next year in 2015

Good luck to all teams in the tournament "Pobeda"!!!

Full results and Photos will appear next week

Be Safe Be Insured

I am pleased to see that our IBF/BCSA Members/Coaches/Clubs have been very prompt in renewing their membership. Insurance is a very important part of the Combat Arts. In this day and age training, competing, coaching without insurance is the height of folly as is not insuring your club. The IBF/BCSA would obviously like you to join us but the important thing is to get insurance from a reputable company.

We in the IBF/BCSA cover nearly all Mat based Combat Discipline we now even cover Combat Sambo players at BSF sanctioned events but we do not cover anything that uses live blades or anything in a ring or cage. The main reason is we do not cater for those types of activities

BE SAFE BE INSURED
