Young Judo Club Big Bang weekend

YOUNG JUDO CLUB

BIG BANG WEEKEND

Saturday and Sunday March 31st Sunday April 1st was a tremendous weekend for the Young Judo Club based at Swale Martial Arts Club. The club, which was started in 1957 by Margret and Knobby Clarke, have been a bit in the doldrums lately with our players not wanted to enter competitions but this weekend all that changed.
On the Saturday our junior section were at Capel Le Ferne participating in the Spitfire Open Judo Championships, most of the YJC players were new to competition. Best player of the day in the whole competition was 12-year-old Lewis Clarke it had an array of techniques and was trying all of them to very good effect but still only managed Silver. In his final fight he was beating his opponent hands down he had a Waza-ari score 7pt and several Yuko’s 5pt scores but like his father Coach John likes the glory of a big throw. Instead of being tactical and holding on to a points score he tried a big throw made a mistake and got held down Lesson learnt better now at 12 then when he is an International Senior (hopefully)
On the Sunday we sent just 3 players to the BJA Kent Championships at Dartford and all three cam back with a Gold a 100% record
Liam Jordan regular Judo, Sombo and Kurash Competitor took Gold in his age and weight category in style his final two fights he scored Ippon (Knockout Throw) with atwo tremendous Hips throws
Ashley Costa our most experience Judoka also a British standard Sambo and Kurash player was in great form winning Gold with relative ease.
Andy Smith was in devasting form winning all his matches with foot throws. Andy is not far away from his Black Belt if he keeps this up it will be sooner then later

Keith Costa 3rd Dan is the YJC Coach in charge of Juniors and Teachers on a Tuesday, with Paul Soulsby finishing as a Judo Coach Keith will take over his Thursday Class, This class will be quite unusual as it will feature Judo, Sombo and Kurash. Lets not forget his Friday Parent and Child class where parents train in Judo with their children. YJC has kept its prices the same for 5 years No that is not true we dropped them this year for £17.50p per month they can train 3 times a week that just £1.34p per lesson

Dutch Open Spitfire Report MMA Comp in Sittingbourne

Click for a report on Dutch Open from Spitfire http://spitfirejudoclub.co.uk/News___Results.php

Swale Open MMA Wrestling Tournament

MMA Wrestling has become very popular throughout the country and Sittingbourne is no different. It seems to be the COOL thing to do and in the 12 months since John Clarke has been running the MMA section for the Warriors Grappling Academy at the Swale Martial Arts Club East Street Sittingbourne he  has had hundreds through the door. Yet most just stay long enough to brag to their mates “I have done MMA” those who do stay realise how hard the sport is and realise you need dedication to keep it up.

This was the second MMA tournament run at the club and this time attracted grapplers from Essex. The rules are very simple all you have to wear is a T-shirt and shorts, and then you fight for 4 minutes with the idea of getting a submission on your opponent. If there is a draw and the end of the match, both are placed in a leg lock position and then they have 1 minute to make their opponent submit, if after this 1 minute they are stood up and fight till one is thrown. As you can see simple but hard and not suitable for wimps.

It was interesting to see the development of the wrestlers and how their skill level has improved in the last tournament most matches finished in a stale mate but not on this occasion as most finished with in the time frame with a submission.
17 year old Mark Salter is becoming a force to be reckoned with he started with the Warriors when he was 16 starting first with Pankration Ancient Greek Fighting System when the club moved to MMA he stayed with it. He now practises Combat Wrestling (Wrestling with strikes) and has recently started Judo and Sombo with Keith Costa on a Friday. Once Michael Hutchinson qualifies as a Full Contact Sombo Coach he will join with him in a new class. The Club needs youngsters like Mark

Most probably the most exciting’s events of the day was the Heavyweight and Open weight section. In the Heavy weight final was Combat Wrestling Coach Michael Hutchinson who background is Kickboxing, CombatSombo and MMA v Policeman Andy Bell a Kick boxer, Boxer, Judo, Player, Sombo Wrestler, Jiu Jitsu expert and MMA fighter. This battle of the giants nearly went the distance with Michael catching Andy with a Leg lock to win but Andy was to have his revenge in the final returning the compliment by Leg Locking Michael.
Oh and we must not forget to mention the youngest MMA fighter 12 year Lewis Clarke fourth generation of the Clarke dynasty doing Martial Arts did not win a medal but had a go. John would like to see more youngest trying MMA, Judo and Sombo
For those have the courage to do MMA  the club practises at the Swale Martial Arts Club East Street Sittingbourne on a Wednesday 7pm followed by Combat Wrestling.

Next tournament at SMAC will be a Sombo Wrestling tournament for Children and Adults and is open to all comer we will supply the jackets. This will be held on Sunday April 15th.

John Clarke & Colin Carrott pass Exam

John Clarke and Colin Carrott

Pass IBF Level 3 Coaching Award

Only one person to pass this before them was 66-year-old Dave Boulding 6th Dan

28 years ago the Judo thinker Geoff Gleeson 9th Dan developed the IBF Coaching Effective Programme at the bequest of the International Budo Federation he was assisted by Martin Clarke 8th Dan.
The Programme was much more then just another Coaching Award Scheme, the programme is very comprehensive as is shown by its philosophy, the philosophy of the programme is laid out under 3 headings :
1)   Self Development
2)   Benefitting Others
3)   Social Obligation
The programme goes on to explain what is required for the 5 different level. The fifth being equivalent to a Degree.

This award was there to produce better coaches and better human beings and had no other value then to gain knowledge but as time went by complete courses like this became unpopular because of the time required for the course and people were saying it was old fashioned. Yet just because something is old doesn’t make it a bad thing.
The IBF had to move with what people wanted and that was gaining qualification by taking certificates in different parts i.e. First Aid, Child Protection, Safety etc. also many organisations were moving to practical exams and this what the IBF followed and they developed the IBF Proficiency Award Scheme which was a system based on Practical application participants developing different Instructor Level. The IBF still distinguished a difference between a Coach and Instructor.

The exam is very difficult there is the obvious things like being a certain standard in your Martial Art or equivalent hours of training, if a competive Martial arts must have a Referees award and Competition Controllers award, First Aid Certificate, etc. but was the hardest part was to give a written answer to some academic questions e.g.:
1)   If illusion is the source of creativity, what is the value of rote learning?
2)   Is Kata necessary, or is repetition the bolthole of the quack?
3)   Is Morality a camouflage for the cynic, or the powerhouse of progress?
There are total of 9 questions, which have to be answered like this.

So you can understand why most coaches did not want to do the Coach Effective Programme because it takes you beyond just teaching a movement. Interesting enough I said early that this type of course was old fashioned by I notice that the relative new UKCC United Kingdom Coaching Certificate now takes several days of tution  and they have followed very much what Geoff Gleeson first suggested 30 years ago. UKCC has government funding so should be more detailed then the IBF Coaching Effective System Geoff helped a little by me all those years ago.

Will the UKCC, along side Club Mark be successful in a limited -but the majority of Sports people will not give up several weekends and at the cost of hundred of pounds just to Coach others especially if they are doing the coaching voluntarily the same will apply to Club Mark. Both these schemes are very laudable but are only suitable for Professional Clubs/Coaches or very big amateur clubs who can afford the expense

Anyone interested in learning to Coach Combat Arts should contact Martin Clarke ibfbcsa@gmail.com or come to the Swale Martial Arts Club 127 East Street Sittingbourne Kent ME10 4BL

Belsey Brothers Success

Casey and Bradley Belsey from the Isle of Sheppy joined the Warriors Grappling Academy last year to try out MMA, Sombo, Kurash and Judo. The Academy is based at the Swale Martial Arts Club East Street Sittingbourne. Both men are accomplished Judo Players representing GB both have been trained by their father 3rd Dan Rob Belsey

On Sunday 12th February 2012 they took part in the Northern Home Counties Open, this was a Senior and Masters Ranking event. British ranking are now done on various competitions so this was an important event for those wishing to compete for GB and eventually go to the Olympics.

Bradley is the oldest of the brothers and fought in the Men’s u60 kilo class winning Bronze putting him amongst the top 3 in the country
Younger brother Casey fought in the men’s u66 kilo class on his way to the final he Scottish and Senior Squad players he lost to the Senior Welsh Champion
These two men along with their Coach/Father have travelled the length and breadth of the UK to compete they train 5 days a week and some weekends and that is the only way if you want to make it to the top in any grappling sport

Both have become excellent MMA and Sombo fighters, we expect to see a lot of MMA titles under their belt in the future and already British Sombo Federation National Coach John Clarke who is based at the Warriors has put their names forward to represent GB in the European Sombo Championships to be during May in Moscow.

Those who are interested in MMA, Judo, Sombo, Kurash should contact us on ibfbcsa@gmail.com or visit www.warriorsgrapplingacademy.co.uk

MMA, Sombo Instructor Michael Hutchinson will be attending a Full Contact Sombo Course in Burnley Lancashire in April. The course is being run by BSF Full Contact Sombo National Coach Allen Clarkin and is designed to get people to instructor level. If Michael succeeds he will be the only qualified Coach in Kent. Full Contact Sombo is an extension of Sombo Wrestling where players can kick and punch I is sometimes called MMA with Jackets. Michael already coaches Combat Grappling on a Wednesday this wrestling without jackets which allows striking

Stroke

Stroke has a new indicator They say if you e-mail this to ten people, you stand a chance of saving one life. Will you send this along? Blood Clots/Stroke- They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue.

I will continue to forward this every time it comes around!
STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters..... S.. T. R.
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening.
Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PMJane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *
Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A
SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(I.e. It is sunny out today.)

R
*Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

New Sign of a Stroke --------
Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.

I have done my part. Will you?

In the other pool Ashley Costa over come Andy smith and Reece Enfold from Folkestone to meet the young Jedi in the finals.
