British Sombo Open 2013

British Sombo & Combat Sambo Championships and Trials

Biddenham International School Bedford
Sunday June 30th 2013
Bedford

This was the BSF 23rd British Open I doubt if many other Countries in FIAS can boast a record like that. There were doubt that the event would even take place as the drop of in people participating in Martial Arts and Combat Sports has been phenomenally distressing, the so called imaginary Olympic Bounce has not happened to the Martial Arts and Combat Disciplines. Yet through the hard work of the British Open Organisers Russell Dodds the event was a undoubted success with over 250 people attending the event, one of the best for many years.

Bedford is certainly the best venue being very central close to the major motorways, just a few miles from the International Luton Aeroport and has many reasonably priced hotels and of course we have the now famous Bedford Grappling Academy with Russell Dodds at its head to organise events.

There were several foreign athletes at the event all were living in this country, there were players from Bulgaria, Lithuania, Latvia and Ghana but we were very pleased to see a team from the American Sambo Association in attendance some of these lads are regular visitors to BSF event and the are most welcome

First on were the children for many of them it was their first Sombo competition, all them were Judoka so this was a new experience. The general consensus was that Sombo/Sambo rules were much more enjoyable as the rules of Judo were very restrictive especially where in Judo you can be eliminated on a pin. In future the BSF will organise the British Juniors on a separate day or include a smaller mat area at the British Open. Sombo in GB desperately needs Lady Competitors but those that did compete were of very good standard.

The men’s Sombo/Sambo was the event that everyone was looking forward to. The 74k , 82k, 90k, 100k, 100k plus were all very competitive. Vinnie Dragon won the 74k title as youngster he trained a great deal in Sambo and this showed when winning this category, Lithuania has many Sambo Clubs,   In the u82 k class 20 year old Jamie Marzetti won his 3rd British Open title, this year was the most competitive event for him, the thing about Jamie he knows what Sombo rules are especially the knowledge that you can pick your opponent of the ground and throw them for maximum points this he did several times much to the delight of the audience. 90k Danny Carrott came up against his old adversary Danny Roberts, Roberts on the last 3 occasions has beaten Carrott so most people were expecting him to take Silver. No way! Carrott managed to pull something out the bag to beat Roberts on a very slim point’s victory. Georgie Georgiev is a Bulgarian who has lived in the UK for many years and has become a regular on the BSF scene he is a real class act in both Judo and Sombo. He won the 100k class for the second year running, if he and Vinnie could get British Passports they would be eligible for selection to the British Team. The 100k plus was one of the best entries in the British in many years, Michael Hutchinson proved to be the best on the day winning Gold in his best ever performance, not only did he win the Sombo he also won the Combat Sambo the only person on the day to take 2 British Titles. Although not up to World Class Combat Sambo standard, he still looked impressive seeing a 6ft 2ins 150 kilo and doing a round house kick to the head is something to behold.

A satisfied BSF Chairman Martin Clarke

There was only 2  divisions in the Combat Sambo and it Jamie Wilkinson who was the one who impressed the Judges in the past all those who have competed in Combat Sambo and SportCombatSombo have just used kicking and punching forgetting it is the throw and submission that makes you a winner. Jamie Wilkinson who trains at the Red Rose CombatSombo Club and is trained that using his strikes to get close to his opponent and throw them was the way to win. He was the only Combat Sambo Player who the selectors considered good enough to go to the Worlds.

BSF Chairman Martin Clarke recently met with the FIAS Russian President Mr Vasily Shestakov in London the meeting was a great success and a press release will be available next week. Because of this Andrew Moshanov FIAS Head of Development visited the British and met with Chairman Martin Clarke there has been some bad blood between the two of them and the BSF but this face to face meeting has cleared the air, now they can work together for the benefit of FIAS Sambo. Many in the FIAS should consider having face to face with their rivals
