Presidents Cup at Bluewater

Presidents Cup at GLOW Bluewater Dartford

Yes the venue of the Presidents Cup has been changed to the GLOW at the Bluewater Shopping Emporium. The logistics of getting people to the Centre of London of London was becoming a Major Obstacle. When FIAS Representative Andrew Moshanov suggested the GLOW I was somewhat sceptical, I did not realise they had a major concert hall, which had been the venue for many a pop concert and major championship boxing.
So on Thursday I went along with Andrew Moshanov FIAS, Russell Dodds BSF Vice President and my wife Valerie BSF Ladies Rep to view the venue. What a terrific place to have this event the Hall was brilliant and with the shopping centre and all the bars, restaurants and cafes not only does it make it the ultimate venue but ideal day out for the family.
The date of the Presidents Cup will be Saturday September 27th 2014. This Competition will be a team event of 8 different Regions Great Britain, Russia, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Belorussia, Commonwealth Asia/Pacific, Commonwealth Americas/Caribbean and Commonwealth Africa.
All the Teams and Officials accommodation and travel will be paid for by the Sponsor, Each Country will be allocated Spectator tickets.

If you are a British National and a member of a BSF affiliated association and want to represent GB in this event you need to take part in the British Open Closing date March 20th 2014

CASC

I have been asked many times about the Community Amatuer Sports Clubs, those who are members of the CASC will know by law you are entitled to 80% Rate Relief rumours have been floating about that this is to cease, this is not the case. The Inland Revenue have been looking into abuse of the system so I have asked my MP Gordon Henderson to look into the matter, below are letters he has received

Past Judo Rules

With many Judoka dissatisfied with the new IJF Judo Rule, I thought it would be a good idea to take a step back to 1989. At that time a lot of Coaches were complaining that there was very little throwing in Judo because most contests forced there opponents on the ground and just done NeWaza basically a form of BJJ. So to encourage people to come and watch Judo and to encourage throwing techniques, I introduced Points Scoring Judo see the  details from 1989(Sorry about the quality it is old) This worked quite well but the traditionalist complained bitterly wanting to keep to the antiquated way of Judo Shiai. With Sombo/Sambo on the increase I concentrated on that style of Jacket Wrestling which was a lot more dynamic. My point is someone from the IJF should step out of the Judo Box and create a completely new set of rules even if it is just an experiment

Further down is the British Officials for the 1989 IBF Multi Nations held at the Swallows see if you can remember the names?

Children in Martial Arts and Geof Gleeson

Just recently there has been a lot of debate on children participating in Martial Arts, below is a reply from a letter I sent to Geof Gleeson about 30 years ago. Is he still right? I think he is

Forget Judo take Up Sambo. New IJF Rules are killing the Art I love

Below is a link to the new IJF Judo Rules

I have to admit this is one of the few occasions that I am thankful I no longer compete as the rules by the IJF are slowly killing the Competitive side of Judo. Some years ago the IJF said they wanted to return to an upright stance and stop the mauling about associated with Sambo. This I felt was an insult to all Sambo Players if any of you have seen World Class Sambo you will know that the sport is a dynamic throwing sport. The inadequacies of Judo was the interpretation of the rules, let me give an example.

In the 1970's saw the start of fighting for grips which eventually became an integral part of Judo but it eventually led to the ridiculous sight of Judoka have what only be called a boxing match. In pre 1970's a referee would shout "Take Hold" if the ignore this command the referee would stop the match make them take hold and restart the match. With regard to techniques like Drop Knee Seoi and that horrible Drop Knee Kata Guruma if the technique was not successful they would penalise. If Referees were stronger using the rules of the 1970's there would be no need to change anything.

Judo has always been a complicated sport for the Spectator: Foreign Language, Hand signals that only a Judoka could understand, scoring where one type of throw would outweigh a multiple of throws. For those who have taught for any length of time will know how hard is to teach beginner what the rules are. Now you have so many rules you will soon need a degree to understand them.

Now see the difference with Sambo another jacket Wrestling Sport:
Match starts and finishes on a Whistle 1pt, 2pt, 4pt and Total Victory are given for throws, ground holds and submissions. All scores are given signals relevant to score Referees Red Arm score to Red if it is a 2 pt score it is indicated Thumb and Finger. There are no verbal scores. So a spectator who has never seen Sambo before can have understanding with in 20 minutes of watching the Sport

So you can see why Judoka are turning to Sambo
