Faversham Judo

Faversham Judo Championships

The IBF Faversham Judo Club organised a Judo Tournament for juniors and Senior Kyu grades. This was an excellent event with over 200 people attending and very well organised thanks to all the officials who gave up their time to assist.  The IBF has a dramatic lack of Judoka prepared to Referee and it left John Barrett and Miles Brown to do the whole of refereeing so a big thank you to them Yet it does put them under a lot strain to always give the right judgement call, we need more referees and judges. IBF Coaches must encourage their members to learn to referee and help otherwise we could end up having no competitions, which is a shame as the Faversham competition proves that Judo is in the ascendency
Well done George Holbrook and Trevor Davies for organising this  excellent event and we look forward to the next one

Full report with Medal Results will be prepared by Faversham Judo Club

FreeStyle Judo

FreeStyle Judo

Here are some links to something called Freestyle Judo, with the radical change of IJF rules it was inevitable that rival form would appear. I see no reason why different types of rules cannot be used if it keeps Judo alive and with more people taking up Sambo something has to be done to put some life into Judo. If you look at the scoring you will find it very reminiscent of my Points Scoring Judo I used some 20 years ago, they say Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Best of luck to Freestyle Judo. I have also included a Sambo Demo just to show what throwing is all about

Sambo to be included in European Olympic Games

Below is an article about the acceptance of Sambo into the European Olympic Games, this is great news for us in the British Sombo Federation and as Andrew says below the start of Sambo/Sombo/Cambo started in 1967 yet the real work has been done by the British Sombo Federation founded in 1986. The BSF has had to rely on its members to cover the costs of Tournaments and International events for many years. In recent years since the FIAS Presidency of Mr V Shestakov the BSF has had financial help and practical help with equipment etc.

This development could get us recognition with the British Olympic Committee and maybe some funding who knows but we will be looking for a selected GB Team for the event in Azerbaijan. This news coupled with the the Presidents Cup and Commonwealth Sambo Championships in Dartford last weekend of September proves that Sambo in GB is on the move and all the hard work done by the BSF since 1986 has come to fruition. This success could not have happened without the hard work of FIAS.

Congratulations to everybody !

Great news came through today as SAMBO was officially approved as part of programme of the 1st European Olympic Games to be staged in Baku, Azerbaijan, 2015

It would not be possible without the true efforts and dedication of the "pioneers of Sambo in GBR and Europe", who started promoting this sport since late 1960s and 1970s here in UK and Europe-wide. Patrick Hickey, President of European Olympic Committee, who compete in the first SAMBO event in GBR for Ireland - is one of them. The Sambo match USSR-ENGLAND-IRELAND (1967) should be commemorated as the staring point of this long road, resulted in such an achievement of FIAS under the current leadership of Mr. Shestakov.

This is a tremendous breakthrough for all of us in UK, who was keeping the fire in the fireplace for all of these years and made it happen at the end of the day.

What's next?  Serious work and close liaison with British Olympic Committee due course.

Congratulations, and lets go serious.

Great Britain proved that we can have medals at the Worlds and we shall have them at the Euro Olympics.

Catch Wrestling

Many people make a big thing about MMA Grappling, I personally have registered our club with the British Wrestling Association which does the FILA Version which is call Amatuer MMA. Yet long before this form of Submission Wrestling came to prominence there was Lancashire Catch as Catch Can or Catch Wrestling. This was a hard brutal form of wrestling not for the feint hearted and I believe started in the the late 18th century. I first came across it back in the 1980's when the famous Jiu Jitsuka Iron Man Trev Roberts showed me some moves, what a lot people do not realise  Trevor was a very competent wrestler. Later a young man named Gary Pollard form the Northeast joined my organisation and he actually had classes in Catch he also wrote a small book on the subject. I recently came accross the YouTube clip below which prompted me to put a piece on my Blog as a reminder to those that think they have reinvented the wheel the past should not be forgotten. On a different subject but in the same vein of remembering the past.  Who uses the Shield Techniques of the ancient Romans? The Police!
