One of the greatest thinkers in British Judo since it first came to the UK in my opinion was Geof Gleeson 9th Dan, I had the privilege of being able to call him a friend and mentor. He was responsible for developing the IBFBCSA Coaching Effective Programme something way ahead of its time. I have finished reading his book “Judo Inside Out” first published in 1983 he gave me a copy and signed it “From one Coach to another” this was great honour because he did not have a high regard of most coaches, one time a very senior Judo Grade someone a lot older then me once asked him to sign his Judo License, he refused brushing this very high grade to one side. At the end of the seminar I asked why he refused stating that he had signed my book, his reply was “You understand he doesn’t” That made my signature even more valuable.
Below is the preamble on the flyer take special note of the second paragraph and remember this was written in 1983 27 years ago! Read through the book and you will find even more gems. Now you tell me this man was not ahead of his times.
Judo's origins lie in Japan, and although judo has been practiced in Britain for over sixty years British interpretation of this foreign skill has not taken sufficiently into account the rationale behind the techniques. The differences in the two cultural approaches - their philosophy, religion, social attitudes and psychological pressures - need to be fully appreciated before judo skills can be most effectively taught. In this book, Geof Gleeson takes a close look at the social pressures and ideologies which have helped to mould the shape of judo in Britain and Japan, and shows how new ways of teaching quickly and effectively at all levels emerge from a deeper understanding of the origins and development of the sport itself.
In a society where sport is becoming an increasingly powerful force and can all too easily be manipulated for personal or political ends, the role of the coach becomes ever more vital; but he will himself need special training to be able to deal with all the various aspects of sport. This stimulating and controversial book offers a new approach to sport education, both specifically in judo and more generally in the wider issues that sport will continue to raise.
Geof Gleeson is well qualified to tackle these issues. As National Coach he has taught and coached judo at all levels of performance in many parts of the world. He has trained in Japan and won competitions in Britain, Europe and Japan. His post-graduate research was concerned with the socio-psychological aspects of championship performance (not just in judo), and he has written on the moral and ethical interactions between sport and society.

Its Free
Can’t give it away for Free
Over recent years we have seen a rapid decline in Martial Arts participation especially Judo so the Swale Martial Arts Club tried something really radical they offer Free Judo every Friday Free Pankration every Wednesday and Free MMA SportCombatSombo on Thursday
You would have thought people would be flocking through the door NO
On Wednesday 2 attended Pankration on Friday no one turned up Thursday was more successful with 8 participants. So what can we do or are the Martial Arts destined to the History books? Mind you it would have helped if our local newspapers gave us a little bit of publicity a statement was sent out to all of them

Russian Fighting
I got the attached from Darren Richardson Face Book site he runs an organisation for Russian Martial Arts
I found it very exciting far better then Cage Fighting but also far to dangerous for the amatuer Martial Arts Player I dread to think what the Insurance would cost if you can get any.
Although a lot of the fighting is uncontrolled take a look at some of the throws superb and controlled If any of you are practising my MMA SportCS you will see the value of throws and how deadly they can be

Local Papers
Local Paper
Our Young Judo Club has been using local papers for over 50 years to inform and promote what they doing for the local community before the advent of computers and email you would write your story and send it to the East Kent Gazette or you would telephone and give your report over the phone, if it was an important event like someone getting a Black Belt, Club Championship or someone winning a British title a photographer would be sent most times accompanied by a reporter. The paper was happy because they getting news and the club was happy because their members were getting publicity for there hard work.
So you would think with all this modern technology i.e. emails digital photography things would be even better, not so. Our local paper has more advertising pages then news and of course each reporter has their preferred sources i.e. their mates so if your club is not part of this inner sanctum you have very little chance of getting a decent report. Our own club is a prime example the Kent Messenger rarely publishing anything about our club or any Judo club come to that unless they are in Maidstone as for Your Swale which is part of the KOS Media group I am not sure they even realise there are local sports clubs but my main criticism is the East Kent Gazette over the years we have spent thousands of pounds advertising with them while our rivals spend none do we get any preference for this NO in fact every report our rivals do they get a photo and a write up every time they enter luckily enough they do not win or do a lot so it is not a regular thing. For some years I have complained each time I am told the photo’s were not good enough which were sent by email yet they are 300 dpi some thing Martial Arts Magazines except, the report was to long. This year several of our pupils gained their Black Belt one was 17 once again my photograph was not accepted and the report given was a 3inch single column. It seems our modern reporter doesn’t have the energy to get out of his seat to look at what is around him apart from when he is in the pub with his mates.
So what do we do just keep plodding along and hope eventually we get a decent reporter, do not bother with the papers or become friends with a reporter and become a drinking buddy?
I know one thing thank God for the Internet at least the ordinary person can get his message out and I will not spend anymore money advertising

MMA SportCS
At Summer Camp I once again tried my MMA SportCombatSombo with Judo and Sombo Players, it seems a strange phenomena as soon as you put a headguard normally sane people get a Blood Lust. I am told them all that the idea is to score points by throwing, holddowns and submissions, this fell on deaf ears all they wanted to do was knock each others heads of, one Sombo Player got concussion even with a head guard.
So I have now stopped all head shots full contact to body standing and on the ground is allowed, when I gather more experience players then I may once again allow head shots. This not just for the safety of the players but also to make the Sport available to all not just a spectator event where people lust for blood and injury

Detect a Stroke
BLOOD CLOTS / STROKE
Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue
!
STROKE: Remember the 1st Three Letters.... S. T. R.
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening
Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital -
(at 6:00 pm Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough...
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(i.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
I have done my part. Will you?

Who is this guy in the Video
I was sent this video clip stating that this was the British sambo Championships
Well one thing is for sure it was not the governing bodies Sombo championships
The British Sombo Federation held their British Open in March and all competitors have to wear correct Sombo attire to enter i.e. Sombo Jacket (Kurtka) Shorts and sombo boots.
These guys seem to be wearing Judogi shorts and no shoes

ClubMark Nonsense
More news on the discredited ClubMark scheme our Club has just been informed that our Welfare Officer has to now attend a course to become a CRB Authorised Document Checker. Can you believe this bureacratic nonsense a person has to go on a course to read a document if the document is so difficult to understand why not simplafy the document, the only reason they do not do this is because some bureacrat will not get paid to run the course

BJA ClubMark
Most of you know of my total dislike for the ClubMark scheme and the fact that I find it totally unnecessary and you will hear a lot more from me on the subject in the future I am just waiting for Faversham MP and Sports Minister to have the courtesy to answer my letters . My Judo club members feel it is in the interest of the members to participate in the scheme yet 2 years down the line the Sittingbourne Judo Society still has not got confirmation on the club Mark even after complying to it every whim and at some considerable cost to the club and its members. Because the British Judo Association has taken so long dealing with this some our members requirements have expired namely CRB check yet when you look at the initial document there is no expiry date.
Some years ago the BJA came to their senses and allowed its members to belong to other Judo organisations as well as their own at this time they approached me to rejoin and bring my members in as well. I agreed but rather then bring my famous Young Judo Club formed in 1957, which I wanted to retain its independence, the members formed a BJA Club called the Sittingbourne Judo Society and appointed me President. To become a BJA Club you had to have BJA Coaches etc, needless to say all my Dan Grades took BJA Grading an all were graded to the same level as they were in the IBF, I also arranged a BJA Coaching Course at the Dojo and once again all obtained the same level as they held in the IBF. So you can see I am no longer particularly anti BJA but I am anti ClubMark which was imposed on us by a socialist government with the sole aim to have sport and Judo controlled by Government bureaucrats.
Have any of you experience of this snake in the grass ClubMark

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
It seems strange for a sport that is so popular there is no National body and no one you can contact to enquire about Instructors. I run the Swale Martial Arts Club in Sittingbourne and feel this sport could compliment my other grappling classes, I have emailed many people involved in BJJ but either get no response or get the opinion that anyone asking to start another club is a threat. Yet all I have suggested would some one like to hire my Dojo and start a BJJ Club as there doesn't seem to be one in a 30 mile radius of where we are.
If there is a National Organisation can some one let me know

interview with Nobby
This is an interview with my Father John Nobby Clarke 6th Dan (1927-1990) it was done by a local Canadian TV station in I believe 1987 which made him 60 not 62. MY Dad was a great mentor to me and what he says made a great deal of sense but he was prone to using poetic license when speaking. The reason I was not in the 1980 Olympics was because I was not selected. The competition record I can not confirm as I was very young at the time. He still had a great deal of knowledge and new ideas some which we take for granted today. It was nice to see the old man again and he looked healthy and this was a year before he his stroke and heart attack which left him an invalid

a message from the past
The graet thing about the internet you get emails like the following out of the Blue
Attn: Martin Clarke Sensei
Dear Martin
My name is Henry Ellis, better known to your dear late mother and father and others in the old days as ` Harry `. I just came across the most touching article that you had dedicated to your dear mothers memory " A Forgotten Heroine " , your mother is someone that I had not forgotten as I have some fond memories, I enjoyed the article and the memories, I was taken aback to see the ` Aikido ` photo of myself with your mother and Joan Spall taken at Grange Farm in 1963, for me that was the best summer school of all..I just wanted to thank you for the article and the photo for which I am very grateful..The internet is surely a most amazing thing when we find items that bring our fading memories back to life.
I would like with your permission to add the said article to my Kenshiro Abbe Blog if that is OK with you ?
Best regards

Banana super food
Bananas
A professor at CCNY for a physiological psych class told his class about bananas. He said the Expression 'going bananas'
Is from the effects of bananas on the brain. Read on:
You may put your banana in the Refrigerator. It will no longer ripen but will stay fresh for up to two weeks. Although the skin will turn black it does not affect the fruit!!
Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with Fiber. A banana gives an instant sustained and substantial boost of Energy. Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a Strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.
But energy isn't the only way a Banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions making it a must to add to our daily diet.
Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression many felt much
Better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin known to make you relax improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.
PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels which can affect your mood.
Anemia : High In iron bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.
Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt making it perfect to beat blood
Pressure.. So much so the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.
Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at Breakfast break and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.
Constipation: High in fiber including bananas In the diet can help restore normal bowel action helping to overcome the
Problem without resorting to laxatives.
Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake sweetened with honey.. The
Banana calms the stomach and with the help of the honey builds up depleted blood sugar levels while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body so if you suffer from heart burn try eating a banana for
Soothing relief.
Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness.
Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a Banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.
Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.
Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5000 hospital patients researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs.. The report concluded that to avoid panic-induced food cravings we need to control our blood sugar levels
by snacking on high Carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.
Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against Intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the
Only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.
Temperature Control: Many other cultures see bananas as a 'cooling' fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand for example pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a
Cool temperature.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural Mood Enhancer tryptophan.
Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6B12 they contain as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.
Stress: Potassium Is a vital mineral which helps normalize the heartbeat sends oxygen to the Brain and regulates your body's water balance. When we are stressed our metabolic rate rises thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.
Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!
Warts: Those keen on natural Alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart take a piece of Banana skin and place it on the wart with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!
So a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an appleit has four times the protein twice the carbohydrate three times the phosphorus five times the vitamin A and iron and twice the other vitamins and minerals.
It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say'A banana a day keeps the doctor away!'
PASS IT ON TO YOUR FRIENDS
PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time! I will add one here want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the banana skinand rub directly on the shoe...polish with dry cloth. Amazing fruit !!!

Birthday Dave 6th Dan
Dave Boulding 6th Dan celebrated his birthday on Sunday he started judo with me in 1971 when he moved from London where he had been training at the London Judo Society and came to me as a 3rd Kyu Green Belt. I was only a 1st Dan at the time and Dave became my first student to become a Black Belt 1st along with Trevor Davies and Martin Wyer (deceased). He has shown totally loyalty to the Young Judo Club and the International Budo Federation over all those years and more importantly he has become a good friend of mine. Dave still teaches as well as supervising competitions and courses, he is a Member of the IBF Judo Committee. He also won a Silver medal in the World Masters Sambo in Malta in 1999.
Dave recently had a little spell in hospital and is now on the mend Happy Birthday Dave

YJC in Scotland
Young Judo Club a Club without a CLUB MARK win in Scotland
Members of the Young Judo Club Sittingbourne based at Swale Martial Arts Club Sittingbourne travel to Dumfries Scotland for our annual pilgrimage to the IBF Scottish Open. This year just three competitors competed from the YJC the financial troubles of the World do not make accept ions for Judoka, the three were 10 year old Liam Jordan , 17 year old Jamie Mazetti and 23 year old Danny Carrott. The reason I have quoted their age is that a couple of weeks ago I was criticised by the PE Mistress of St Peters School because I believed that her school should do more to encourage her children to join clubs as School Judo is limited, the three players I have mentioned are proof of my belief each one of them started Judo at about 6 years of age and in Danny’s case still with us at 22 an impossible thing in a School especially a Primary School. The Young Judo Club was founded in 1957; 53 years of producing Judoka and a Club that doesn’t have the controversial CLUB MARK.
Liam Jordan one of our lightest Judoka was once again on Gold winning form beating his opposition in tremendous form, Liam was accompanied by mum Sarah who also helped out as an official. Danny Carrott 3rd Dan was favourite to win Gold in the Men’s under 90k but his fight with Danny Roberts from Scotland proved to be extremely hard last year Carrott beat Roberts but at the end of this years match they were both equal and the match went to extra time Carrott attacked Roberts with a powerful hip throw only to be countered but Carrott gymnastic qualities stopped Roberts scoring but popped two of Carrott Ribs putting him pout of the tournament. Danny Roberts went on to win the u90k class beating 17 year old YJC member Jamie Marzetti in the final. Jamie also won gold in the Young Men’s event. Several YJC members helped officiate and David Wellsman was awarded a special trophy for his help, David was a successful Junior Judoka but has always moaned that he can not see a photo of himself on the Club wall well now we a picture of him receiving a Judo Award.
The event was organised by IBF Scottish Rep Robin Hyslop 4th Dan although it was not the best turn out it was still better then numbers we are getting in the South. Well done Robin and we look forward to attending next year
If some bureaucrats have their way clubs like the Young Judo Club will forced to close if they do not get a Club Mark lets hope the Coalition government have the sense to scrap the Club Mark and save money

Summer Camp News
SUMMER CAMP NEWS
After a shaky start people have started to book in, what has excited me is the fact for the first time at the camp I have allowed Juniors 11 years to 15 years to participate and we have to date 12 juniors on the course. Although supervised the juniors will be participating in the full course quite a growing up experience for them. Seniors as expected are down but we hope to have really enjoyable course, there are still plenty of spaces on the course book in advance juniors £200, seniors £250 book on the day £275, those wishing to attend daily and not sleep it is £50 a day.
Good news from Tom Starling 7th Dan is that he will now be staying at the camp and offering C&R and Kobudo, he will bring a few Boken down with him and other practice weapons, so people need not worry about having to purchase any weapons. However, if anyone has their own sword and they want to learn how to use it please bring it with them for Iai-Jutsu practice and start of our Jiu-Jitsu IBF New Iai-Jutsu Kata & Syllabus. He will be also bringing manuals with him of the Jiu-Jitsu IBF syllabus.
I am also pleased to say that since my Hip and Knee have been replaced I will be teaching Sombo/Sambo, CombatSombo and MMA SportCS. Those who wish to do MMA SportCS should bring MMA Gloves and Shin & Instep,

Is This Sombo History
Interesting article from the Net
Sombo
Every SOMBO practitioner winces when a well meaning martial arts savant describes SOMBO as Russian judo, or better yet, Russian combat judo.
That is akin to describing karate as western boxing but with kicks. There is a relationship, of course, but more like third cousins thrice removed.
The founders of SOMBO sifted deliberately through all of the world’s martial arts to augment their military’s hand-to-hand combat system. One of these men, Vasili Oshchepkov, taught judo and karate to elite Red Army forces at the Central Red Army House. He had earned his nidan (second degree black belt) from judo’s founder, Jigaro Kano, and used some of the Osensei’s philosophy in formulating the early development of the new Russian art.
SOMBO, however, was born of native Russian and other regional styles of grappling and combat wrestling bolstered with the most useful and adaptable concepts and techniques from the rest of the world. As the unfortunate buffer between Europe and Asia, Russia had more than ample opportunities to sift through the martial skills of various invaders. Earlier Russians had experienced threats from the Vikings in the west and the Tatars and Genghis Khan’s Golden Horde from Mongolia in the east. The regional, native combat systems included in SOMBO’s genesis are Tuvin kuresh, Yakuts khapsagay, Chuvash akatuy, Georgian chidaoba, Moldavian trinte, Azeri kokh, and Uzbek kurash to name a few. The foreign influences included Dutch Self-Defense (a European version of Javanese Pentjak Silat), various styles of Catch-as Catch-Can wrestling, savate, muay thai, wu shu, jujitsu, and other martial arts of the day plus the classical Olympic sports of boxing, Greco-Roman and free-style wrestling. SOMBO even derived lunging and parrying techniques from fencing. Fencing was included in this list because SOMBO’s founders recognized that swordsmanship and unarmed combat have been linked throughout the ages. The samurai of feudal Japan needed their jujitsu for the occasions when they did not wish to harm an opponent, or when they themselves were unfortunately swordless on the battlefield. Fencing concepts such as the lunge had already been incorporated into savate to increase the art’s striking distances.
SOMBO’s early development stemmed from the independent efforts of Oshchepkov and another Russian, Victor Spiridonov, to integrate the techniques of judo into native wrestling styles. Both men hoped that the Soviet wrestling styles could be improved by an infusion of the newfangled techniques distilled from jujitsu by Kano into his new style of jacket wrestling.
In 1918, V. Lenin created Vseobuch (Bceobshchee voennoye obuchienie or General Military Training) under the leadership of N.I. Podovoyskiy to train the Red Army. The task of developing and organizing Russian military hand-to-hand combat training fell to K. Voroshilov, who in turn, created the NKVD physical training center, “Dinamo.” Spiridonov was a combat veteran of World War I, and one of the first wrestling and self-defense instructors hired for Dinamo. His background included Greco-Roman wrestling, American Catch-as-Catch-Can wrestling, Pankration, and many Slavic wrestling styles. As a “combatives investigator” for Dinamo, he traveled to Mongolia, China, and India to observe their native fighting styles. In 1923, Oshchepkov and Spiridinov collaborated with a team of other experts on a grant from the Soviet government to improve the Red Army’s hand-to-hand combat system. Spiridonov had envisioned integrating all of the world’s fighting systems into one comprehensive style that could adapt to any threat.
Oshchepkov had observed Kano’s distillation of Tenjin Shin’yo Ryu jujitsu and Kito Ryu jujitsu into judo, and he had developed the insight required to evaluate and integrate combative techniques into a new system. Their development team was supplemented by Anatoly Kharlampiev and I.V. Vasiliev who also traveled the globe to study the native fighting arts of the world. Ten years in the making, their catalogue of techniques was instrumental in formulating the early framework of the art to be eventually referred to as SOMBO. Here, Oshchepkov and Spiridonov’s improvements in Russian wrestling slipped into the military’s hand-to-hand-combat system.
Kharlampiev is often called the father of SOMBO. This may be largely semantics since only he had the longevity and political connections to remain with the art while the new system was called “SAM” or “SAMOZ” or “SAMBA” and finally “SAMBO/SOMBO.” Spiridonov was the first to actually begin referring to the new system as one of the “S” variations cited above. He eventually developed a softer, more “aikido-like” system called SAMOZ that could be used by smaller, weaker practitioners or even wounded soldiers and secret agents. Spiridonov’s inspiration to develop SAMOZ stemmed from an injury that he suffered that greatly restricted his ability to practice SOMBO or wrestling. Refined versions of SAMOZ are still used today or fused with specific SOMBO applications to meet the needs of Russian commandos today.
Each technique for SOMBO was carefully dissected and considered for its merits, and if found acceptable in unarmed combat, refined to reach SOMBO’s ultimate goal: stop an armed or unarmed adversary in the least time possible. Thus, the best techniques of jujitsu and its softer cousin, judo, entered the SOMBO repertoire. When the techniques were perfected, they were woven into SOMBO applications for personal self-defense, police, crowd control, border guards, secret police, dignitary protection, psychiatric hospital staff, military, and commandos.
These applications were often further subdivided. SOMBO devoted particular time to developing teamwork in the police and internal security applications. It was crucial that officers and agents not work against each other while arresting dangerous fugitives or spies. SOMBO designed and rehearsed rescue tactics for comrades being attacked by armed or unarmed assailants. It was important that the rescuer act quickly, but not worsen the situation with his efforts. Here again, teamwork enhanced tactics. If the victim were also trained in the rescue tactics, he could aid his rescuer in effecting his escape.
Many applications had specific situational or occupational techniques. For example, there is a series of techniques to be used by bureaucrats and other officials who might be attacked while working at their desks. Particular emphasis was paid to using the environment (i.e. using the desk, the chair, or even a pen) as both weapon and shield.
Ironically, the military applications developed defensive techniques against weapons that quickly became offensive techniques with the same weapons when they were stripped away from their attackers. A partial inventory of this weapon training includes bayonet fencing, clubs, knives, handguns, and unconventional weapons such as entrenching tools, hats, jackets, and chairs.

Jail for scam artist who fleeced fight club of £180,000
JAILED: Paul Griffin.
POLICE have welcomed a three-year jail term for a scam-artist after a laborious and complex four-year investigation.
Paul Griffin fleeced a martial arts organisation of more than £180,000, leaving about 60,000 amateur fighters uninsured against injuries.
He was hired by Chaddesden-based Amateur Martial Arts Association to be in charge of organising insurance policies for its members.
The group provided students and instructors in karate, judo and many other martial arts across the country with insurance cover and grading exams and competitions.
Sergeant Matt Carson, who led the inquiry, said: "This was a long and laborious case to prove, so it is satisfying that the people involved now have at least some sort of sense of justice.
"One of the biggest challenges was going through all the data we received and recovered."
He said that this included all the information and details of members of the association that had been sent through to Griffin to be underwritten.
Sgt Carson said: "This was a mammoth task as all the records were held on hard copy and had to be inputted one by one and furthermore a full analysis then had to be done to see who was and wasn't covered.
"The most worrying thing about the case was that of the 63,369 members put through by the association to Griffin, 60,281 were not insured or insured correctly, which meant they had no cover at all."
During sentencing, Derby Crown Court heard that between 2001 and 2004 Mr Hibbert hired Griffin, of Essex, to take out cover for about 65,000 of the group's members.
But despite taking more than £250,000, Griffin took out insufficient covers, leaving about 95% of members uninsured.
But Tom Hibbert, 85, who set up the association 40 years ago, said all claims were met.
Mr Hibbert, of Chaddesden Lane, explained: "Sometimes Griffin would meet them. He would be deciding whether to pay out or not – after all, he had enough money to do that.
"Or I would pay out myself and ask him for a refund.
"But although we had no idea what Griffin was doing, we made sure every claim was met."

Dodgy Martial Arts
I am always warning my members about dodgy Martial Arts Organisations who claim to be all things to all men especially when it comes to Insurance. Below is a letter from Paul Griffiths which I received many months ago at the time I said :
1) I never joined but it seems I had a membership number
2) I did not know what the letter was about
3) The letter read as if it was some sort of miscarriage of Justice
That was until today I had a phone call from Derbyshire Police, they dealt with case and had him put in prison. It seems that Paul Griffiths swindled over £100,000 and could be as much as £180,000 by not placing insurance. I am told by the Police that the AMA had an agreement with this gentleman's BMNAA to place all their insurance which he did not do. Paul Griffiths had a block Insurance for his organisations which was no where near the amount of members he had and of course when the Insurance company found out his insurance was null and void. This was over a period of years hence the amount. This is not the first time I have heard of this scam and I am only reporting what was said to me and did ask the Police if I could report what the said and said yes as the man was convicted with all details in the Public Domain.
My own associations Insurance is with WWSI and I have to list the names and addresses of every member and you can see our Insurance details on www.budo-ibf.co.uk with address and telephone number of the Insurance Company
please read the letter and tell me would you join his new association the MAC?
If you cannot enlarge this go to http://www.budo-ibf.co.uk/Paul%20Griffiths.pdf

Kurash
British Kurash Open
Swallows Leisure Centre
Sittingbourne
The British Kurash Association recently held their Annual British Open at the Swallows; this had entries from all over GB as well as Uzbekistan and Turkey. Kurash is a Wrestling style from the Turkish Uzbekistan region and is over 500 years old the idea of the sport is to try and throw your opponent. There are no pins on the floor and no submissions, throwing only traditional styles of wrestling is quite common throughout the World, colder climates would use Jackets warmer parts would not, in England we have Cornish which dates back pre Agincourt and Cumberland and Westmorland.
The Warriors Grappling Academy based at the Swale Martial Arts Club train in various forms of grappling Judo, Sombo, Kurash, Pankration, CombatSombo, Belt Wresting, and MMA SportCS with its members doing extremely well. 17 year old James Marzetti is one of our brightest starts winning the U21years and gaining Silver in the Men’s event
Warriors Results:
Gold
KATIE JOHN
ASHLEY JORDAN
JAMIE MARZETTI
SILVER
RICHARD SEAMAN
JAMIE MARZETTI
DANNY CARROTT
BRONZE
LIAM JORDAN
OLIVER BROUGHTON
COLIN CARROTT
People may be wondering what has been happening at the Swale Martial Arts Club for several weeks the club has been encased in scaffolding. The club had a major leak in the roof and some of the sand stone facade began to crumble so we had over £3000 worth of repairs to do and while their club members repainted the front and cleaned up the signs.
The Judo section is closed during August but we hope to have a Major membership drive in September where we offer the first lesson free of charge.
Anyone interested in becoming a member should contact Martin Clarke at sombogb@blueyonder.co.uk or visit www.sittingbourne.org or telephone 01795 437124

Pankration & MMA SportCS
First British CombatSombo Association
MMA SportCombatSombo Championship
&
First PankrationUK Championships
Warriors Grappling Club Sittingbourne Kent
This was both organisations venture into competitive Strike/Grappling competition; PankrationUK is a newly formed organisation which has strong links with the BCSA. It was decide to run a trial event with just a few competitors to test whether or not the events could be a success and I pleased to say it was.
MMA SportCombatSombo is a mixture of Grappling and striking, with the emphasis on grappling, and is a derivative of Combat Sambo which is practised throughout the world this style allows kicks to the groin, to the head, joints and allows punching to the head whilst on the ground, although it has a massive following it does not have mass appeal for practitioners. Martin Clarke who founded the CombatSombo system believes that style is to dangerous for the amateur Somboist and is nearly impossible to insure people for events. So he redeveloped it suit his own moral code and make it much safer so out go all punching to the head whilst on the ground, kicking to the groin and joints, kicks and punches to the head must only be done against the head guard, no elbow strikes, competitions to be done on a mat not a ring or cage.. This has made it a safer sport and more importantly a sport that can be insured, a sport not a gladiatorial conflict.
MMA SportCombatSombo Players wear Sambo, Jackets, shorts and boots plus head guard, shin and instep and MMA Gloves. Scoring is simple throws can be Total Victory, 4pts, 2pts, 1pts, Strikes can 4pts for a count of 8 Total Victory count of 10, ground hold 2pt or pts, Submission Total Victory by strangle, arm lock, leg lock, ankle lock. Victory is by Total, 12 clear pts or end of match majority points.
Danny Carrott at 23 years old was the youngest competitor as a highly ranked Sombo Wrestler, Kurash player and Judoka was the favourite to win the over 80 kg section which he did with some panache with only his 51 year old father giving him some problems. Danny realise that by taking a few strikes to his body and head guard he could get in close to destroy his opponent with some devastating throw.
I can see that MMA SportCombatSombo will be a success if we can convince people it not another form of Cage Fighting and the Injury level is minimal and no more dangerous then Judo, it is a safe way to link Striking arts and Grappling Skills together.
Results:
Lightweights:
1st Paul Kemp Spitfire Grappling Folkestone
2nd Martyn Vicary Devon Krav Maga
3rd Russell Dodds Woodside Grappling Bedford
Heavyweights:
1st Danny Carrott Spitfire Grappling Folkestone
2nd Colin Carrott Warriors Grappling Academy Sittingbourne
3rd Saul White Warriors Grappling Academy Sittingbourne
Pankration
This was also our first try at Pankration only being introduced to it in March of this year when we had the European President over for a course, with no experience officials in with no experience personal at all the event went very well. When survey after the two tournament 50% said their first preference was Pankration but it will not survive until we can get a supply of Pankration Uniform because no matter where we try nobody seems to be able to supply us at the moment we are using old fashion Rugby shirts and Judo Trousers.
Inintially when you read about Pankration you think this is the same as SportCombatSombo but NO the different style of scoring seems to put more emphasis on Striking .
Semi Contact Rules:
The rules as we understand it 3pts for semi contact kick to head, 1pt kick and punch to body including punching on the ground NO punches to head, 3pts for high throw and 1pt for low throw, Submission finishes the match points are totalled at the end of time.
These rules totally change the way the same fighters from MMA SportCombatSombo fought instead of going to their strong points of grappling they all went the way of trying to gain points from striking not one match was won on a submission. It certainly made for a different type of competition both styles were interesting but what has convinced me that the two should be treated as different sports.
Results:
1st Danny Carrott Spitfire Grappling Folkestone
2nd Paul Kemp Spitfire Grappling Folkestone
3rd Colin Carrott Warriors Grappling Academy Sittingbourne
I can see both disciplines taking of as they are different MMA SportCombatSombo will favour Judoka, Brazilian Jiu Jitsuka, Sombo Wrestlers, freestyle wrestlers who want to try an MMA style while Pankration will suit those doing Karate, Tae kwon do, Kung Fu, Kick Boxing. In September at the Warriors Grappling Academy East Street Sittingbourne we will have classes in Sombo and MMA SportCombatSombo on a Thursday 7.30pm and 8.30pm, On a Wednesday we will have Pankration at 7.30pm.

Judo Back In Schools
Return of REAL school sports: Tories to revive competitive games in bid to turn nation back into champions

One of the Sports is Judo, for some of you who have long memories you will remember my parents Nobby and Margret teaching in School in Kent and Bexley from the 1960's through to 1980, I also taught in Kent Schools from 1971 till 1980. This was the hey day of Judo with my own Club in Sittingbourne having in access of 500 members and there were rival clubs in the Town as well, my father organised many Judo Tournament through GB but the biggest was at The Stour Centre Ashford where he had a 1000 Junior competitors. In 1980 due to Government cut backs Judo was ousted and the slow decline until today started.
The BJA to their credit has been promoting Judo in Schools by giving a Coach mats and a vehicle where there they can introduce Judo to Schools but paying a Coach £12000 a year is not going to get you the best Coaches.
If we are to get Judo to become viable again we need to get Individual Schools to hire Coaches from all organisations to teach Judo on a term to term basis and produce youngsters of good quality. The BJA system in Kent has been a dismal failure
For the following reasons:
1) You need charismatic coaches who have experience in all aspects of Judo. Judo is not a Martial Art which can be taught to teachers in a 12 hour course
2) At present the Coach will only recommend Club Mark Clubs this is ridiculous as the great majority of Clubs have no interest in the scheme a scheme I might add is bureaucratic nightmare. Plus the coach sometimes recommends a club in another town that’s not a way to encourage kids
3) A short course is not enough for youngsters to understand Judo
In Sittingbourne we have forged links with schools like Sittingbourne Community College, my son John works there, Westland’s School where Dave Boulding a coach of 30 years experience is a caretaker he will be starting an after school club in September hopefully this may expand to the school have Judo on the curriculum
Will this happen I hope so but I doubt it with no money to back it up it will go down as a good idea and something else to blame Labour for the ruination of British Sport

BJJ or Judo 1970 style
This type of BJJ I enjoy throws as well as Ne Waza, or should we call it 1970's judo an era when I competed for a spot on the 1980 Olympic Team. Adams, Jacks, Radburn, Starbrook would have loved this. Time the people in the IJF looked back because soon BJJ will overtake Judo

MMA SportCombatSombo
I am back of holiday so you will all be bombarded with news.
recently I submitted a Blog about the CombatSambo competition as used in Russia and said in my opinion they were barbaric as they allowed kicks to the groin, punches to the head while your opponent was trapped on the ground etc, I then went on to say UK Sport would never accept this as a sport nor would an Insurance company and I had modified the rules to make MMS SportCombatSombo a much safer and one that can be called a sport.
As expected Darren Richardson and his friend in the USA condemned me for altering Russian CombatSambo but in his haste to vilify me he came up with a good point in which he said anything can be insured as long as you can afford the premium, he is yet to tell me what insurance company and what the cost would be, but most importantly if there is company who would insure have they ever paid out on a claim?
I still prefer to run a sport which minimise the chance of injury. So why am I writing this well you have guessed I am advertising the following

a Busy time ahead
A very busy time ahead Colin and myself will be of to Paris in June to support the French Sombo, October I will be taking a team to World Masters, beginning of November to Holland for Judo Comp two weeks later back again for Sombo Comp, Robin will attending The World Sombo in Uzbekistan. Plus we have a Senior Novice MMA SportCombatSombo/pankration event in July late July Junior Sombo/Pankration Wrestling Scottish Open Sombo Judo last saturday in july and Agust Summer camp
I was questioned recently about Combat Sambo and how it would be nearly impossable to insure because they allowed really dangerous techniques such as kick to the testicles etc. It was suggested you can get insurance as long as you pay the price so two questions what insurance company because I can not find one and what price?

FIAS COMBAT SAMBO
Over recent year we have had a plethora of Strike and Grapple Martial Arts especially from the Ex Soviet Union. The most popular is Combat Sambo/Sambo Combat organised by the World Governing Body FIAS a rival in Russia I recently got criticized because I called them second rate yet I stand by my what I said 1) They are not members of the World Recognised body 2) There is very little safety equipment worn by this rival group 3) In fact they do not have to wear standard equipment i.e. some wear Sambo Boots some do not. My critic suggested he preferred the Non Affiliated group because they allow more ground work, he obviously comes from a Non Throwing background I do not my background is Judo and Sambo/Sombo Wrestling both emphasise big throws maybe harder to do and more physical but that is what I enjoy. In fact that what drew me to Sombo was its emphasis on throwing when I started Sombo/Sambo in the early 1970’s all there was the Wrestling side and you got scores for throwing and the only floor work was arm locks and leg locks, at the time Sambo was one of the FILA recognised disciplines of free Style, Greco Roman and Sambo, because Sambo was the smaller sport they had to accept hold downs to appease the other wrestlers. I WAS LICKY ENOUGH TO MEET SOME Ex soviets who actually trained with the founders of Sambo and they told me the following : Sambo was devised for Soldiers so they win in battle, they were taught to throw there opponent hard and fast, break and arm or leg an injured soldier would need another to help him. They brought this attitude to the competition arena, they said if you rolled around the ground with your assailant in Battle or on the street you were vulnerable. When Combat Sambo was introduced many years later these criteria held fast now that may not be to the liking of many MMA fighters but that is what it is
I had this as well from a Russian Fist Fighter wasnt martin slateing combat sambo (2 words) just in his blog?
saying its to brutal?
maybe his team...' the warriors' will be fighting in the fias one this year? last i saw poor danny carrott ( who is a good wrestler and top guy) be thrown into combat sambo, within second had his nose broken! He sarcastically asked why was there no World Sport CombatSombo Championships, knowing full well we only managed to negoiate Insurance Cover this year
.There is no World CombatSombo Championships yet but numbers are improving especially in the States so maybe next year I will have an International for our members. Yes I made a mistake putting Danny into the Combat Sambo in France I thought it was a Novice Competition. With regard to FIAS Worlds The BSF will be more selective of who we allow to represent GB this year Lee Till will be our only Representative no one else is in GB is of a standard and we want representatives who do not embarrass us and who are fit enough to fight
Any sport that allows kicks to the groin and repeated pouches to the head whilst on the ground is brutal and barbaric and as President of the governing body I have to be guided by UK Sport and Insurance companies. Sport CombatSombo is a watered down version which meets the requirements of UK Sport and the Insurance Company. We will be having our Comp in July for our members only that way I know they are insured and know the rules, Health and Safety is a must.
I have made my case clear to the FIAS Committee sadly they do not agree with me but will talk to them again at the FIAS Council meeting
Some of the other systems with maybe the exception of Ukrainian Hand To Hand leave a lot to be disered have a look at the clips
Where is the control or sport expect Fist Fighter will love this

Judo or Sambo
Now tell me what is the best throwing sport this or modern rules Judo and what is more exciting
Second rate Worlds Followed by the Official FIAS World Championships
This was not the Official FIAS World Championships. FIAS World Championship you wear proper Sambo Attire Plus shin and Instep Gloves and Head guard unlike this competition where one of the players is not even wearing a pair of Sambo Shoes also all Sambo matches are done a Mat with a Circle This is done on a Judo Mat. This looks very much like a second rate World Tournament

What is MMA?
WHAT IS MMA?
I am told it is an abbreviation of Mixed Martial Arts but what is that?
MMA is the biggest Martial Arts phenomenon at present but something I have not particularly followed my own expertise is more Traditional Martial Arts & Grappling, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, CombatSombo, Sombo, Sport CombatSombo, Kurash, Belt Wrestling, Submission Wrestling etc.
I am told that these are now old hat and that I must use my expertise to move into MMA or Cage Fighting the latter I have no interest in what so ever. So I began to enquire what is MMA first I found out it is very difficult to get Insurance cover mainly because MMA has no distinct History or Philosophy. Many years ago when MMA first started I was told it would be the ultimate Fighting System taking the best from every Martial Art and blending it altogether, well I have heard that one before and none have achieved its aim all end up following a route which the founder wants, based on his strengths and weakness but the success of MMA may have proved me wrong.
Now I can understand an Insurance company not insuring an MMA organisation who claims that MMA is a mixture of all Martial Arts this would be near impossible to insure, for one: how would one become expert or even proficient when it takes years of training and dedication to become proficient in one Martial Art/Combat Discipline?
So we have established that MMA is not blender full of Martial Arts made into one Martial Arts Soup, so what are these clubs doing who call themselves MMA. Well my research show that a great deal of clubs are doing different forms of Wrestling without Jackets, some call themselves MMA Submission Wrestling i.e., where the aim is to gain a submission, the rest do points scoring Wrestling like the Japanese Combat Wrestling this where Free Style Wrestlers added submission to there arsenal of techniques or most resemble the old fashioned Catch as Catch Can. The one thing in common there is hardly any throwing.
Now the next group of MMA fighters are the ones who just wear shorts and wear padded gloves and have a mixture of Striking and Grappling to defeat their opponent, this I believe is where the original founders of MMA come from and the name MMA was an ideal Product Name, The Combat Discipline was born round a set of rules rather then the other way round and this made perfect sense, back in the mid 1970’s I tried something similar and called it Shiai Jutsu (Competitive Art) using different styles of rules, all competitors wore a JudoGi, Shin and Instep, Padded Gloves I even developed a grading system, top Martial Arts people like Iron Man Trevor Roberts reached 6th Dan. The style never really took of as it was a mish mash of everything. Yet round about the same time the Gracie’s had developed their own style of Ultimate Fighting the for-runner of Cage Fighting which was a success story and won them World Wide Fame. There’s must be the success story of the Century, some say I should have carried on but I felt it did not achieve what I wanted the Ultimate Martial Art and my heart was still with Jacket Grappling Styles. For the last few years I have ventured into mixing Striking and Grappling with Sport CombatSombo this is a some what watered down version of the Russian Sambo Combat and in March I am having the Pankration European President over for a seminar, this ancient sport looks very interesting
So what is MMA?
I believe it is a precursor for training in becoming a Cage Fighter, which is an extremely hard style of Combat all though I wish they do not use the word Fighting as it gives the wrong impression and could be associated with back street fights. The skill level is more then just Fighting, Cage Combat would be a better name and would give it more Gladiatorial Kudos. MMA as I said is a product name it may have started as Mixed Martial Arts but now just MMA will suffice.
MMA has been good thing for those who do not want to do Traditional Combat Discipline and has given them another outlet, to train and compete. If that is all you want to do is there no need for the rituals of Traditional Martial Arts and that is not decrying Traditional Martial Arts after all I have been doing them for 55 years. MMA has encouraged a lot of people to start up little clubs with small groups of people getting together to have a wrestle which is good. The problem all these little groups do not have any structure or Insurance that is why I am starting GRAPPLINGUK an organisation that still allows them their independence but can give a guiding hand.
Grappling UK will be offering Competitions and Courses home and abroad in many different grappling styles, such as:
With Jackets: Judo, Kurash, Sombo, Jacket Submission, Jacket Wrestling, Mongolian Style, Back to Back, Belt Wrestling, Kosen Judo, CombatSombo Wrestling
Without Jackets: Sombo, Back to Back, Submission Wrestling, Points Wrestling, and Judo Ne Waza
Grappling with Strikes: Sport CombatSombo and Pankration

RingMasters
After the successful IBF Multi Nation Judo Championships at Hasting I have been riding on a high especially after the poor turn out at the British Sombo Championships and the snide remarks but things seem to get better. Because on Saturday I met two very nice gentleman from Herne Bay and Dover there name were Shane Burr and Lee Whittington they popped into my Dojo in Sittingbourne to promote their RINGMASTERS Thai Boxing-Kickboxing-MMA event on Saturday 28th August.
Instead of the normal what we do is better then anything else you have seen, they came along and were prepared to listen and compare notes with me and my Son John a rather unique thing in the Combat world especially with people who do MMA. These lads not only specialise in the above discipline having amateur and professional fighter but they also do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, for those who have seen my CV they will see I have done many Combat Sports but my main interest has been the various forms of Jacket Wrestling so the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was of great interest to me. The meeting has led to us taking some of our Sombo and Judo Players to there session on a Wednesday night in about 3 weeks time, they tell me they get up to 50 players I do not know of any Judo Club with that type of numbers, hopefully the exchange will eventually lead to us having a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu section at the Swale Martial arts Club Dojo in Sittingbourne and even putting a few lads in to their MMA tournaments.
It was pleasure to meet these guys and puts back my faith into meeting Grapplers from different styles. If you are interested their competition go to www.ringmasters.tv sadly I will have to miss this one as it is the end of the Summer Camp and Grading day

AASF US Open

Reilly Bodycomb in the first round of the US SAMBO Open Photo: Tyga Maclin What was, on the surface, a high class grappling tournament in Rahway, New Jersey, yesterday, opened a political can of worms as a series of freak injuries at the USA SAMBO Open revealed unrest with national management.
The primary attraction of the USA SAMBO Open is the classical rules of the Russian martial art known colloquially as “sport SAMBO,” one of three recognized rules sets to bare the SAMBO name. Sport SAMBO is not dissimilar from Olympic rules Judo, with the most notable differences being the allowance of leg locks, the disallowance of chokes, generally more time spent on the ground, and increased difficulty in scoring a perfect throw that will end the match.
After the sport SAMBO festivities, which featured an international cast of athletes from nine countries and 40 competitors total in the adult division, the event was closed with five exhibition matches of Combat SAMBO. The Combat SAMBO rules have their roots in the Russian military and, though practiced in traditional SAMBO uniform, allows for a variety of strikes and is often described as “MMA with a jacket on.”
During the five exhibitions, there was string of freak injuries where four of the competitors were forced to seek medical attention, two with serious shoulder injuries. While any injury is unfortunate in athletic competition, the real drama surfaced afterward when it was revealed that the tournament had insufficient accident insurance to cover the unexpected injuries. Comment:It is normal for every competitor to carry PA insurance but sometimes competitors do not bother in all future BSF Sombo events all competitors will have to bring proof of insurance
The tournament did boast key international talent, including world champions originally hailing from Russia, Georgia, and even Mongolia. As indicated by the palpable absence of spoken English it would seem like the only competitor not in attendance was you.
The 40 adult competitors, some of which swing athletes that can compete in both ‘cadet’ and ‘senior’ divisions at 17 years of age, made up a group that New York Combat SAMBO head coach Stephen Koepfer referred to as “demonstrably smaller” than last year’s competition. Comment: There was complaints about our British Open with regard to numbers seems the same is happening through out the Western World
AASF president David Rudman also recognized the smaller turn out, noting that the overall participation was about “50% less” than the year before.
Sport SAMBO is a highly active endeavor with rarely a pause.
comment: I am not the only one to think Sambo/Sombo is a great sport“It’s the most tiring sport I’ve participated in, next to soccer,” said bronze medalist and multiple martial art veteran Reilly Bodycomb. “I wouldn’t say it’s harder than MMA. But in MMA you’re strategically encouraged to back off with your jab or take a breath when [you’re in a dominant position.] Here you can’t do that.”
Constant action would seem to make SAMBO the most palatable grappling competition to spectators, with the possible exception of NCAA wrestling, if it were better advertised. Even among the thriving grappling culture in New York and New Jersey, few American athletes were even aware that there was a grappling tournament with world champion level competitors going on in their back yard.
Rudman maintains that advertising the event outside of the insular SAMBO community, which in the US consists mostly of members of the Eastern European immigrant communities that are heavily concentrated in Brooklyn and Coney Island, costs money that his organization simply does not have. With all the organizational flaws in the SAMBO Open, the one undeniable positive is the sheer talent competing.
“Where else could my guys compete with world class [SAMBO competition,]” Koepfer said of the tournament, which New York Combat Sambo members Reilly Bodycomb and Ariel Elghanayan competed in. “It’s a mixed bag tournament. It’s good for my athletes, but it’s bad for the sport.”
Comment: Looking at the Standard The BSF will be seriously looking at taking a Team next year it will certainly good for our British Sombo Players

Sorry this was a boring match
I am pleased to say I have sorted out my differences with Steve Koepfer (the American)and he rightly pointed out that he was not the only one to Criticise me Darren Richardson also enjoyed knocking myself and the British Sombo Federation but we are used to that from Darren.
Frenchman Gael Coadic sent me a Grappling Video and asked for a comment
I replied "this bored me to tears" sorry to say this was not what expected he then sent me the following
Martin; you probably don"t know but this is a fight sport and it"s called "Grappling" !
It doesn't matter what you Wear to fight but, yes, it's boring; it's not a dancing show and it's always boring when you know nothing about fighting technics.
Goodbye Martin
Grappling is a generic term but why is it as soon as you do not agree with someone they insult you I have had 55 years in all sorts of grappling sports with and with out Jackets
I found this match boring as the standard of the two players was not very high any decent Olympic FreeStyle Wrestler would have beaten them. Yet I expect the two fighters enjoyed the tussle and fought their best and some of their entourage enjoyed the event
I do not like events that do not have a regulated attire as make the whole event look scruffy plus there can be safety issues.
I run Ground fighting competitions because i know some of my members enjoy them especially those who can not take throws I much prefer the Jacket Ground fighting as it adds more techniques with the use of the jacket
Most of my competitions have a mixture of points for throwing and holds plus submissions my favourite is jacket Grappling but then as world medallist in Sambo and World masters Judo Champion I would say that
The best thing about grappling sports is its diversity but you do not have to enjoy all them and some in your mind maybe boring .
Can you now let me have your real name , your age and your competition record then we can all judge who would be the better to comment on knowledge of Fighting Techniques
I have posted the video on my face book site

A reply from the American
Its only been a couple of hours and the replies have phenomenal, most ask why I replied to the American and why get worked up, well to answer that I am not I just enjoy a good debate, those who know me will know that especially when it comes to politics. I have said I will give Steve the right to answer which I have done; he invited me on to his discussion site but I have refused my experience with them they only end up as a slanging match and people threading inaccurate statements
Can I quote one Email I have not given the name because it was private: well my friend
you have to much time on your hand or you would not have bothered with all this miss-information they are trying to mix words with a master! Although I´m out cannot stand the petty politics any more- it is a shame such a great sport suffers so. For all complaints you are still trying to keep it alive in UK. This was much appreciated and from some one not far of my age
So I will reply to Martin's comments regarding me directly:
1) He asks if he should market like I do (I assume he means the ASA). My answer is simple. Yes, he should. Why not? The ASA has done very well promoting and spreading sambo in the US. Our growth in 7 years has been fantastic.
MC:But it yet to catch up with the numbers Josh Henson Had
2) He claims he has the ability to multi-task all his various organizations without having sambo in the UK suffer. Fine, I can't say whether he can or can't. I am not in the UK and I am not Martin. If he feels he can do justice to sambo while simultaneously managing all his other projects, more power to him.
MC:Thank you but really thanks should go to the Various associations I am with
3) He admits his website is amateurish, but blames lack of funds to hire a web designer...and the fact that he does it himself. We all lack funds these days. But we are all not multi-tasking as Martin says he can do without having sombo in the UK suffer. My suggestion would to be to concentrate resources and get a solid professional website up and running for UK sambo.
MC:In your attack on me about the web site you said it was not up to date? I have just been on your ASA web site and it states that it last up dated in January 2010
4) Martin clearly does not undertand my use of the word "oxymoron". The definition is: "a combination of contradictory or incongruous words".
(http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/oxymoronic) MC:Oxford University Press is where I got my info from
Thus, I am not calling him foolish. I am saying that it is not congruous to speak politics in a formal BSF article of the event.
5) Martin asks if WWG would be such a venue to discuss politics. My answer, yes. WWG is an open discussion forum. We do not post political discussions on our ASA website.
6) Martin agrees apparently that it is insulting to call new players "cannon fodder" in his article but, feels it is fine because it is true. It may or may not be true, MC: which one is it but it is still IMO insulting and not encouraging to new players who may be on the fence about continuing sambo. Such comments IMO are not appropriate for an official governing body report.
MC:But you forget to say that I run many tournaments suitable for Novices, gone are the days when a completely inexperienced players enters the British, the health and Safety issues would be tremendous
7) Martin agrees that his article is self serving and feels that it should be and says he was criticized for making public comments. No, he was not criticized for speaking publically. It was the nature of the comments. I don't think he understood the word "self". Yes, his article serves himself (Martin Clarke), not the BSF or sambo as a whole in the UK. This was my point.
MC:So an article on the British Sombo Championships does not benefit BSF or Sombo interesting?
8) Martin asks if I had been informed about the numbers of past events via e-mail. No, I have not. However, one look at event results from past years listed on his website, compared to this year's results, and it is clear numbers are down.
9) Regarding the Martin Clarke Flag, which Martin feels was appropriate as it was his logo and he was sponsor. Ok, fine. Was it "Martin Clarke" who was the sponsor? Or was it the BSF? Where was the FIAS flag? The UK Sombo flag? The BSF flag? Were you the sponsor or was your organization the sponsor? There is a difference. And, regardless, I still find it egotistical and funny. Again...self serving for Martin Clarke, not sambo in the UK.
MC:If you looked you would have seen the BSF Banner on the wall were you not aware that this was the BSF British Open? On the entry form it said the British Sombo Federation present
10) Regarding Anthony's match. Yes, Anthony lost 12-0 to a very skilled thrower (your guy). And he still may have lost. Danny was VERY good. However, if you take into consideration your open statements about being concerned about Anthony's grappling as well as compare how long Anthony was given to secure the armbar against Sharpe (1:24 of video 1) and how quickly he was stood up with Danny (2:27 of video 1), how can you disagree that there was a discrepency in refereeing? Anthony had the arm hooked, one leg hook in, and the second leg ready to go, yet he was stood up. I would also ask why Danny was allowed to score a pin against Anthony with a scarf hold when other fighters were not as in this clip with Doug when he had to change from scarf to sidemount in order to score a pin (:44 of video 2
MC:Once you have been the sport as long as I have you may learn to take defeat gracefully

Can I quote one Email I have not given the name because it was private: well my friend
